Five Things To Be Avoided In Affiliate Marketing

Don’t Make Ugly Site:

First impressions are vitally important! You have only a few seconds to create interest in your site and to build compatibility, when a visitor arrives at your site.Your goal is to create satisfactoriness, acceptability, and trustworthy attachment, with your visitor. Follow the design principles when you build your website to achieve success in affiliate marketing.

Don’t Choose The Irrelevant Affiliate:

Instead of follow in the footsteps of others, choose the product of your interest. Then do some research and come to know that how demanding is that product in market. If the product truly appeals to you it will be much easier for you to sell it to your website visitors. Don’t join an affiliate program or sell an affiliate product simply because they are TRENDY.

Don’t Make Loads Of Banners On Website:

Don’t load your site with number of banners without actually providing good detail on the product. The best way to get around this is to put a lot of detail WITH the banners. It is important for customers to know and understand the features of the products, and good content will help them do this. Keep your site simple, easy to read and navigate, clean and uncluttered.

Don’t Join Too Many Affiliate Programmes:

No need to enroll yourself into multiple programmes at a given point of time in order to maximise your earnings. Joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them. To get excellent result is join just one program that pays a 40% commission at least. Then give it your best effort by promoting your products favorably. As soon as you see that it is already making a reasonable profit, then you can join another affiliate program. This technique is slow but sure.

Don’t Cheat Your Customer:

The golden rule of advertising is know about what you are selling. Use your service first to see if it is really delivering what it promises. Pre-selling of product is all about sharing your personal experience with a product. As an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. Try and test the product you plan to promote and be aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Know the thought, concept and psychology behind it. Otherwise you will fail to promote and recommend your product to your customers convincingly. Your customers will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in you and this will trigger them to try them out for themselves. Explain why you like it.

Yahoo! Joins Google’s Open Social Platform

Yahoo! yesterday announced its decision to combine forces with rival online giants (significantly, Google) to make the open online platform — OpenSocial, a success.

The project aims to develop a set of standards that can be used across all social networking Web sites, and will make it easier for software developers to write applications for Web sites such as MySpace.

The story so far has had plenty of twists, the kind that are seen only in Bollywood potboilers. Once, Google and Yahoo! were major rivals. Google grew and Microsoft began feeling the heat. Recently Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo! which fended off the attack. Now Google and Yahoo! seem to be becoming the new best friends for each other. Google wants to maintain its leadership in the online advertising and search space against Microsoft, and Yahoo! does not want to be bought by Microsoft.

This is the first major joint project for Yahoo! since the hostile takeover bid by Microsoft. Google started the OpenSocial Foundation in November last year and it took MySpace, which has 78 million users worldwide, on board immediately. Orkut, Google’s networking site, and Bebo, which was recently bought by AOL, Friendster and LinkedIn all support the project. With Yahoo! also now in, the project has decided to become a complete non-profit organization, which is set to be fully authorized by July 1. The only major rivals for the project now are Facebook (which was given $240 Million by Microsoft last year) and Windows Live Spaces, who have neither signed on nor supported OpenSocial.

“There is only one place developers go right now, and that is Facebook,” said Forrester Research Analyst Charlene Li, and added, “OpenSocial makes it easier for everybody else to get in the game.” Incidentally, the project aims to reach 200 million users.

Google Product Manager Dan Peterson, said, “Welcome, Yahoo! We look forward to growing the social Web together.” Google has launched opensocial.org as a main “hub” for information pertaining to the project. Google’s Joe Kraus said, “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.”

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Vice President of Platforms Wade Chambers, said, “Openness is in the Internet’s DNA and it’s also a major aspect of our culture here at Yahoo.”

Yahoo! has so far turned down Microsoft’s $45 billion takeover offer stating that the company is worth more than that. This month Yahoo! announced that it was opening two new research labs — one in Israel, and the other in India.

SES New York: Will Google Sell Itself Out?

Battelle was on the “Orion Panel,” focusing on Universal Search, alongside James Lamberti, senior vice president of Search and Media for comScore, Lyndsay Menzies, managing director for Big Mouth Media, and Jack Menzel, project manager for Google’s Universal Search. The session was moderated by Search Engine Watch’s Kevin Ryan.

The discussion began by centering on Universal Search statistics and branding concepts. Lamberti reported that in comScore’s most recent look at search, 87 million people (assumedly US) had searched in a week, and 58 percent of them received some sort of Universal Search result. The conclusion presented then, was that as search real estate becomes more valuable, organic SEO focus, especially with image and video, will be critical, especially as click rates go up.

The conversation turned, though, when Battelle challenged Menzel on the top-result presence of Google properties like YouTube and Google Finance. The now old-school algorithmically determined search results were easy for machines to process, he argued, but now that other types of media like images and video are more commonplace, Google has to look to other methods.

“When you have images and video,” he said, “you are changing the game in a really big way….That’s why Google bought You Tube, and is focusing on You Tube.”

Menzel countered that YouTube videos appear so often in the search results because YouTube contains so much video content. He denied Google was changing its model.

Battelle also noted that results from Google Finance appear for stock queries above Yahoo Finance, which used to be at the top. Menzel noted that other non-Google properties are linked to as well.

Battelle doubted, though, that Google would maintain its algorithmic objectivity forever. He cited a panel discussion he participated in alongside actor and comedian Damon Wayans, who detailed a YouTube partnership for his online video site WayOutTV. Battelle quoted Wayans as saying he was guaranteed 16 million impressions on his homepage.

“Does that guarantee Google results? I’m curious because they give him guaranteed attention and anyone who has been in the industry for a long time knows about such deals. I worry about how that might get into the search stream.”

Menzel reiterated that Google was fair, relevant, and unbiased in its search results.

Battelle seemed unconvinced and pushed for an admission that Google was becoming a media company and more like Yahoo. But with all the media properties Google now owns, it was hard for Battelle to believe there wouldn’t at some point be a conflict between the need to promote Google properties and the need to remain true to its algorithmic objectivity.

Menzel stayed on point, though. “Let me reiterate. We are trying to rank only the most relevant stuff and if it happens to be on You Tube it will be on the list. There is nothing in the algorithms that are inherently biasing the results to Google.”
