How the Meta Description Tag is Displayed By Search Engines

By : Nidhi Gupta

Its a bit difficult to say that how the search engines display Meta description tag. Search engines are always playing around with what they display as the descriptions for any given URL in the search engine results pages (SERPs), so you may see something other than what I see. In fact, its believed that Google has an entire “snippet team” devoted to this!

Meta Description Tag

Below are some of the happenings found in the SERPs as of today, in terms of what they show for descriptions and snippets:

  1. Unlike 3 years ago, today Google will default to your Meta description information when you search for a page by URL such as www.example.com. Yahoo does the same, which was also true for them in 2004. But of course, not many people other than the site owners themselves search using a page’s URL.

  2. Google will often default to the Meta description information, even if
the searched-upon keywords do not appear within it, which they weren’t doing
    as much back in 2004.

  3. Yahoo will also default to the Meta description info; however, they tend to take just the first part of the Meta description and then add a snippet of text from the visible page copy that happens to have the searched-upon keywords within it.

What to Post when you Don’t Have Anything to Say

By : Sandy Mitchell | Source: Weblogs.about.com

What to Post

We all have those days. You know the ones…when you should post something on your blog to keep it current, but you can’t think of anything to post. What’s more: the more that you think about it, the less likely you are to come up with anything. What should you do? Abandon the blog and come back tomorrow? Well, that’s one approach, but we all know that a well-maintained blog is more likely to keep readers and more likely to make you money. Consider these ideas if you just can’t think of anything to say:

Link to another post. We all read dozens of blogs a day. (Or, at least you should be reading a lot of blogs if you want to stay current about what’s happening in your topic.) Consider linking to a post that you think makes a good point. Don’t steal the post. Just offer your opinion about it and provide a link. Voila! instant post.

Link to a YouTube video. YouTube has millions of videos, everything from how to grip your golf club to a winery tour. It’s highly unlikely you can find something appropriate for your topic. YouTube gives you the code. Just write a short introduction and you have your post.

Enlist a guest writer. Do you have friends that write about your topic? Offer to write a future post for them in exchange for a post on your blog. This also has the advantage of giving your blog an added point of view.

Recycle a blog. You don’t want to do this with a recent post, but take a look at those posts from this time last year. Many are still applicable with just a little updating. Plus, it’s a rare reader that will remember the post from 12 months ago.

Experimenting With Channels

By : Nidhi Gupta
Channels

Channels are a doorway to the google adsense cave that’s filled with gold. Channel is a perfect name as they provide a way to know which way the money is. They can be used to record impressions, CTR, CPM, and earnings statistics for a certain box or even a page. It’s up to you to use that information to make it earn you even more money. Also keep in mind that nothing is set in stone so if you think a color combination can do better in a different place other than the one your research provided then by all means try it out. Staying fluid is a necessity in life as well as google adsense. Channels can be used in several ways from finding out which places on your website are the money earners, which colors are the eye turners that seem to work with your particular website, and the third of course which format is best for your website. Those are the three things that one can use channels for, let’s explore each:

Placement - Where you place an ad plays a major role in your earnings. Through experimenting with different places can one truly find which ones on your website visitors like to look at, therefore click your ad. This is where channels come in, you can keep track of the different positions by creating different channels for each. The all time favorite being above the fold (all the way on top of everything else) you can create a channel called “topbannerwebsite” the website part could be the site you are placing it on. You want to make the name of the channel as specific as you want, don’t be afraid every character can be included in the name. Set a timetable of the certain channels and see which ones perform better than others. This should allow you to know where your users mostly look and pay attention to. It takes about a week to be sure a spot will continue to bring in the same results or even month if you have the time. Now that you know the place let’s see which colors can make the place look even better.
