GoogleBombing Gone, and Google Now Showing More Links

By : Nidhi Gupta

Google Bombing - SEO

It was a big couple of weeks for Google. First they tackled their long standing “Google Bombing” practice then they gave us a way to see more of the sites linking to our domains.

It has been all over the web – the fact that Google now considers Google bombs to be ancient history. That is because they claim to have refined their algorithms enough to negate the Google bomb effect.

For example, a search for “failure”, “miserable failure” and a handful of other similar terms seemed to always return the Whitehouse bio page for President Bush. That has since been removed.

Now you may be wondering “what is a Google bomb?” Well it’s nothing terror related. It’s simply a way to fool Google into giving a site a high ranking based on a huge volume of links. For example, in the above instance, there were an enormous number of sites linking to the bio page using the same anchor text. Therefore the page was getting an unnatural amount of link popularity for those phrases.

This is also why its recommended to rotate your anchor text when you do link building. Because if engines like Google see that all your links have the same anchor text, your site could then also lose its rankings for that phrase because Google may have determined that your linking strategy was similar to a Google bomb.

Now this doesn’t mean that every single link should be different, but it does mean you should have a variety of phrases at hand and rotate some links every so often.

The other important Google news has to do with the ability to now get a more accurate count of your site’s Google links.

This has been an ongoing problem for webmasters and a real sore spot for most SEM’s because of Google’s apparent inability to show us all the links it has found pointing to a particular site.

For example, when you do a “link:somesite.com” search on the 3 main engines you could get a few hundred or thousand links on Yahoo! and MSN, but as few as a dozen on Google.

This is because Google claims to only show a portion of links (which represent all your links) and they also filter out non-relevant links.

All that changed with the addition of a “links” tab in your Google Webmasters Console.

If you have a Google account you too can get access to this valuable information. Simply browse over to Google Webmaster Central and sign in. Once there, create and submit your sitemap and watch the valuable data begin to flow your way. For more information on Google Webmaster Central, check out the Webmaster help center.

Do You Have Perfect Incoming Links On Your Website?

By : Admin

Incoming links are one of the most important factors for high search engine rankings. If your website doesn’t have enough incoming links then it’s very difficult to get high rankings for a competitive search term. It’s important that you get the right kind of links. If you have 20 good incoming links then you’ll get better rankings than with 100 bad incoming links. Hence, it becomes inevitable to have perfect incoming links on your website. So what makes a good incoming link? There are several points that can make a link better than other links:

  1. The link should use the keyword in the anchor text.

If you want to get high rankings for a search term then the links to your website should use exactly that text. The text that is used to link to your site (the “anchor text”) influences the words for which your website will get high rankings. Make sure that the texts that are used to link to your website contain words for which you want to get high rankings on search engines.

  2. The link should be from a relevant page.

Links from related web pages usually work better than links from unrelated pages. Links from unrelated pages won’t hurt your rankings but Google likes links from websites that are related to yours better.

  3. The link should go to a relevant page on your site.

While it’s okay to get links to your home page it is better to get links to the page that is most relevant to the chosen anchor text. If the link text matches the content of the linked pages then it’s more likely that your web page is really relevant to that term and it’s more likely that you’ll get high rankings for that search term. In addition, you increase the user experience. A surfer is much more likely that he’ll buy on your site if he gets the correct page.

  4. It’s good if the link is from an authority site.

Links from pages with high authority will help to increase the TrustRank of your website. Links from websites with high PageRank have a positive effect on the rankings of your own site. Unfortunately, the Google PageRank that is displayed in the green bar in Google’s toolbar is not the PageRank that Google uses for its ranking algorithm. You’ll often find websites with low PageRank that rank higher than pages with high PageRank in the search results. Don’t trust the green pixels and use common sense. If a website is well known and if the site has good search engine rankings then it’s likely that it is also an authority website.

  5. The link must not have a nofollow attribute.

The nofollow attribute tells search engines that they should not follow a link. Links with that attribute don’t help your search engine rankings. Unfortunately, you have to check the HTML code of your link partners to find out if they use a nofollow attribute to link to your site. If you don’t want to check the HTML code of each website manually, you can use the link check command in IBP & ARELIS to quickly check if your link partners use a nofollow attribute to link to your site.
