By : Nidhi Gupta

Banner Advertising is the act of placing image or text impressions on web pages. Usually these advertisements are linked to a URL (web address) of an item or a business being promoted.

Banner Marketing - Web Marketing

More often than not banner ads are linked to an image which represents a company’s logo. Other times the image of a banner ad will represent the subject of the ad. Two of the most basic examples are when an image of a home is used to promote mortgage services and when a stack of cash is used to advertise an internet marketing program, and so on.

How to Make an Advertising Banner

You can use one of the free or paid banner advertising systems. If you plan to make your own banner ad usually tools will be provided for you to do so.

For instance, some banner ad making systems will allow you to upload an image or design which you would use for your ad or business logo. You usually also have a variety of different advertisement background colors and ad layout styles to choose from.

Different Shapes and Sizes of Advertising Banners

The banners that you make to be placed on web pages for advertisement can be made into a variety of different shapes and sizes. Two of the most popular sizes are the rectangular-shaped full sized banner or half banner. These two types are usually placed at the top of web pages, and they run horizontally.

Half or full banners sometimes are placed in the middle of a web page as well, in between blocks of text. If you are wondering about placement of these types of advertisements you may want to check out sample placements. These are displayed on a variety of different websites which are dedicated to help you make banner ads.

Other types of banner ads that are shown on web pages that are of a square, vertical, and medium rectangle shape. When placed in the right places on website pages they can be very effective for advertisement.

The Question of Affectivity-Do Banner Ads Still Work?

Some individuals and companies who use banners say they do help while others say they do not. The effectiveness of a banner ad depends upon how it is placed and how it is designed. One of the major points to remember when creating a banner ad is that it usually requires a call to action, such as “click here”.

The average click through rate (CTR) of a banner ad is about a half a percent. Every additional change that you make to an ad (including the suggestion above) can possibly increase that rate. Some examples of ways to grab peoples’ attention with your banner involve asking your viewers a question such as “Are You Sick and Tired of Being in Dept? If so, Click Here”.

When you give your readers something of interest it will cause them to want to click on it. Besides the suggestions already mentioned you can also use bright colors (especially the primary blue, green, and yellow), publish a banner ad series, or offer visitors a reward.
