By : Nidhi Gupta

When Internet was still in the “infant” stage 10 years ago, someone had the great idea of using bookmarks or placeholders for websites that we had visited and enjoyed. It was a fantastic and easy way for us to remember and keep track of sites.

Now in the era of Web 2.0, people also have this great idea of sharing those “bookmarked” sites with our friends. This is what we call social bookmarking. So, how can you, as an internet marketer use social bookmarking to drive more traffic to your website?

Any web pages can be bookmarked. So, right now, any web page can be shared with friends as well. We can use social bookmarking as a technique to drive traffic. Yes, the idea is to get readers who visit your website to bookmark it and share it with other people too. Of course, people can also email the links to their friends. But this is deem too “tedious” for most people. They had to log-in to their email accounts and send it to their friends. Require some work and not really user-friendly to recommend websites.

Fortunately, the entire blog community has simpler way to share great links with other people. There are many tools online that are very easy for readers to share links to your site. If you are using a WordPress blog, there are many plug-in that provide you with a “share this” link with every entry you posted.

Another method is to add your website to the major social bookmarking sites such as Technorati (http://www.tecnorati.com), Digg (http://www.digg.com), Del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us), StumbleUpon (http://www.stumbleupon.com) etc. Such social bookmarking sites also allow readers to post reviews too, therefore allow other people to find your site much easier too.

So if you can provide good information on your websites or blogs, and place it on a social bookmarking site, you can attract new floods of visitors and drive more traffic to your site that you never thought possible!
