Yahoo vs. Google: The Only 7 Things Yahoo Does Better than Google

By : Admin

Google is out and out no.1 search engine and most of us resort to Google for most of our internet chores like daily web searching, email, chat, RSS feeds, etc. it blows Yahoo (and most other Internet companies) clear out of the water.

Yet there are a few things that let Google down. Other search engine like Yahoo (although Yahoo attracts comparatively lesser traffic) excels Google in many ways. It’s either because Yahoo does it better, or because Google doesn’t offer it. Here are the only 7 things Yahoo does better than Google:

  1. Personal Finance: Yahoo Finance contains a great wealth of original content that easily rivals some of the biggest financial sites in the game (CNN Money, TheStreet.com, etc.). The interface is equally intuitive and accessible to both new investors and longtime financial gurus. Google Finance is coming along, but it isn’t quite up to par just yet.

  2. Answers to Questions: Yahoo Answers allows users to ask questions or answer other user’s questions; a simple concept that works well for Yahoo. Google has no such active service. The closest competition on the web right now is Ask MetaFilter which is also a great question-answer service.

  3. Website Backlink Info: Most webmasters like to know exactly how many sites are linking to their various websites. Yahoo makes this especially easy with their “linkdomain:” search operator. It quickly provides a full list of incoming links to any given domain. For some reason Google does not publicly disclose this backlink information, but instead provides a small sample of quality incoming links to a given domain via it’s “link:” search operator.

  4. Image Hosting and Sharing: With its recent purchase of Flickr, Yahoo now rules the Web 2.0 photo sharing market. Flickr is currently the king over all the other photo sharing sites out there. Although, lets not forget that Google rules the Web 2.0 video sharing market with YouTube.

  5. Local Search: If you are looking for businesses around your town or city, Yahoo Local is a step ahead of Google. While Google can perform local searches in a variety of different ways through their standard search interface and Google Maps application, Yahoo Local is a more polished service that puts all local search capabilities on one convenient page. Yahoo local is sort of like a digital Yellow/White Pages.

  6. Entertainment Portal: From music to online games to sports, Yahoo provides a solid entertainment web portal capable of satisfying various entertainment and leisure user demographics. For better or for worst, Google isn’t trying to be an entertainment portal, so it doesn’t even come close to competing with Yahoo in this regard.

  7. Privacy Policy: Yahoo is arguably better with the privacy concerns of its users, in comparison to Google’s privacy policies.

Ten Things You Should Know About Your Site!

By : Nidhi Gupta

Below are the ten things that most annoy visitors to your web site. If your site has any of the faults below… get rid of them fast!

  • Spelling Mistakes… The error most likely to get your site the ‘unprofessional’ label. No matter how big your company is, or how excellent the product and service you provide - all that a visitor to your site knows about you is what they see - and a spelling mistake will destroy your image faster than any other method.

  • Broken Links… Second only to spelling mistakes for getting the ‘unprofessional’ label (a kiss of death to sales which always depend on building trust). Check, and check again. Be especially careful of links to graphics on other sites. If the other site is down, or the other webmaster changes the name of the graphic, your page shows a broken link.

  • Java and Javascript… Want to stop 5% or more of your visitors from viewing your site? Here’s the answer. If the interaction on your site can only be achieved with Java or Javascript then you should test it with every browser you possibly can - and with every security setting that those browsers have! Java and Javascript tend to be reliant on browser type and version being used.

Using Perl or some other form of server based CGI script will avoid these problems, but can be slower. CGI scripts run on the server and deliver an HTML page to the browser - avoiding the need for the browser to do any processing, and therefore avoiding most incompatibility problems.

  • Speed of loading… A very common complaint - ‘too slow’ immediately alienates your visitor. It’s their time that you are wasting. Make sure that all of your graphics are optimised. Avoid huge gifs and jpegs whenever possible.

  • Too few graphics… The antithesis to the previous complaint! Even though visitors do not want a slow loading page - they do want attractive graphics in the design of the page. Keep them small and interesting wherever possible.

  • Colour… Be careful with colours (this is the UK spelling for color - not a spelling mistake!) - especially where you are using a coloured text on a coloured background (be particularly careful of textured backgrounds). Browser and screen combinations can differ in the way colours are represented - and what looks fine on one browser will be unreadable on another. Either stick with simple colours for text and background - or test, test, test.

  • Frames… Can make or break a site. Be careful in the way they are put together, and be aware that a proportion of visitors use browsers that cannot view frames.

  • Payment methods… A surprising number of online visitors do not have or will not use a credit card. Offer alternative payment methods on your site - advice that we are only just taking ourselves!

  • Cookies… Not on every page please! A common complaint on sites that use cookies is that they overuse them. Many people set their browser to either refuse cookies, or to ask before accepting them. A cookie on every page will rapidly drive these visitors away.

  • Music and background sound… Be very, very sure when using music that it is the right thing to do. If in doubt, don’t.

Do’s and Don’ts To Top 10 Rankings In Google

By : Admin

Google is the most dominant search engine on the net and delivers the largest amount of traffic. Most of the webmasters try their best to get top 10 ranking in Google. However, it is not a cumbersome job to rank higher on Google but it does needs a lot of time and efforts to be put. Most of the novice webmasters make silly mistakes do more harm to their website instead of any good! Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for better ranking with major search engines.

The Do’s:

  1. Make a master list of the keywords you wish to target. These should be closely related to the theme of your site. It is best to choose low to medium competitive keywords. Check the keyword competition by seeing how many sites are listed in Google for that keyword.

  2. Once you have your master list of keywords, find long tail related keywords to target. Check out the competition and daily searches made for each chosen keyword.

  3. Creating quality content should always be your main goal. Write for actual visitors who will see and read your content. Write fresh content because Search Engines love fresh content. Tie this quality content in with your chosen keywords. Use one keyword phrase per page.

  4. Having your keyword in your domain name will score big points from search engines. Each page of content should contain your keywords in the title & Meta tags for that page. It is suggested to have your keyword in the URL and use hyphens to separate your keywords.

  5. You should have your keyword in the headline title of your page. Sprinkle your keyword and variations of it throughout your page. Don’t over do it but make sure the robot/spiders will clearly discover what your page is about.

  6. Try Article marketing. The higher the quality of your article, the more links you will receive.

  7. Off page optimization is important in obtaining high rankings in Google. Getting quality One-Way links and putting keywords in their anchor text is very important. Anchor Text simply refers to “the underlined clicked on words” in your links. Including keywords in anchor text tells the search engines exactly what the links are about.

  8. Take advantage of using blogs, RSS feeds and the social bookmarking sites like Reddit and Digg. At the very least your site should have a blog and RSS feed attached to it as this is an effective way of boosting your keyword rankings. Tags have also become very important for getting higher rankings.

  9. One of the fastest ways to get your links displayed on Google is to pay for them by using Google AdWords. In Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising you bid or pays so much per click for your keywords and you only pay when someone clicks your links. Organic links (SERPS) also returns better traffic. Depending on the competitiveness of your chosen keywords you have to decide it for yourself that which would b best suitable for you PPC or Organic Search. Just go for the best fit. The rewards are well worth your efforts.

The Don’ts:

  1. Do not submit to thousands of Directories.
  2. Do not participate in linking schemes.
  3. Do not use content that is already being used by hundreds of other sites.
  4. Do not use blackhat tactics.
  5. Do not overstuff your site with keywords.
  6. Do not use the same keyword for all your incoming links and don’t point all your links to your homepage.

If you will follow the above mentioned Do’s and Don’ts by heart then you will certainly attain a top 10 ranking with the major search engines like Google. However, consistent and sincere efforts are suggested.
