The most important element for a webpage is its title! A page title is the key information that returns when search engines list results to a keyword search. A title tells your visitors (potential customers) as what the page is all about and what they can expect to derive from reading your webpage!
A title, basically, is the information that appears at the very top of the browser window when a webpage loads and within the underlying code (e.g., HTML code) that is enclosed in the element. It lets the visitors know about the content of the page.
Title is useful for the search engines as well, as it helps them to determine the relevancy of the search query.
Let us now have a look on the things that we should keep in mind while drafting a title for the page. These are:
-
Length of the title: the length of the title is an important component because title is meant to show up in the bar at the very top of the window. One should keep the following things, about the length of the title, in mind:
- Longer titles are generally better than shorter ones but they should not be too long.
- A too long title reflects only the first part on Google will display repeated dots (…) at the end.
- Title should utilize the full space available.
- It should be about 60 to 70 characters or maximum 10 words.
- Availability of user search strings should be there.
- Try to make use of a word processor as it checks the length and also provides spell checking ability.
-
Keywords: while drafting an effective title for a page. Always make sure that:
- Keywords are included in the title. You should use the phrase that you want to rank high on, in your title.
- Do not use the same keyword phrase multiple times in the same title.
- Don’t use a single word as keyword; rather a string of words or a phrase will be much effective.
- Try to make use of longer form and the plurals of the keywords as and when possible.
-
Attractive: always make sure that you put in your best efforts in order to make the title of the web page as attractive as it can be! And the other things to be remembered are:
- The title should address the action the searcher has in mind.
- Try to address the searcher personally through the title.
- Make your title interesting and compelling.
-
Phrasing: When a limited number of characters is available to describe the page, grammar and sentence structure do not remains really very important, when it comes to the page title compared to its importance to the content of the page. Putting grammar-correct words as the, and, is etc., in the title may take up valuable character space that could have been filled with more valuable keywords.
-
Individuality: individuality of the title is really important and each page should have a different title. Also, that title should be relevant to the page.
