How to Evaluate Affiliate Marketing
By: Deepti Jain
Affiliate marketing is revenue sharing between online advertisers/merchants and online publishers/salespeople, whereby compensation is based on performance measures, typically in the form of sales, clicks, registrations, or a hybrid model.
Affiliate marketing is about connecting buyers and sellers and rewarding those that facilitate the connections.
It is Pay for Performance!
Benefits of affiliate marketing include the potential for automating much of the advertising process (accepting & approving applications, generating unique sales links, tracking & reporting of results) and payment only for desired results (sales, registrations, clicks).
In a few short years, affiliate marketing has become a significant force in how commerce on the web occurs. Thousands of merchants now use affiliate marketing to get business done. The model is now being flexed to drive behavior beyond mere commerce transactions.
Running a successful Affiliate Program requires more than a good network and software.
The overall success is based on the combination of two things:
First, the capability of a program manager to recruit, motivate and communicate with their affiliate marketing partners in order to achieve the objective of driving programs forward.
Second, the efficient allocation of resources for creative and programming development. Affiliate marketing is not a stand alone system. It requires an integrated approach.
There are 4 major things that each and every affiliate program needs to have if it is to be a success. So let me put them forth in the form of a bunch of C’s!
Commission, Creative, Consistency, and Communication!
Now the question arises how to promote it? The answer is e-mail!
Using email to promote your internet home business will help you make more sales and will also promote your web site. You must be careful when sending out email however, because of the amount of spam that is in circulation.
Affiliate marketing can be as easy as promoting someone else’s link in your own email. And it can be more strategic!
It is important for you to earn your customers trust so that they will want to buy from your site. Affiliate programs are only successful when they are making money, so you will have to do your best to advertise the best ways you know how. There are a few ways that could work out for you!
- Use your own website!
- How can one forget the Incentives?
- Not to forget the link popularity!
- Write articles on a regular basis.
- Make use of Autoresponder Series.
- Choose the best and effective Affiliate Program.
- Interaction should always be there. So do not forget it! Invite interaction from your readers and website visitors. Get to know your audience and build rapport. Would you prefer to buy from a stranger? Or someone you know? Ask for feedback with the articles.
- To become successful as an Affiliate Marketer you need to have the right tools and resources in place. An affiliate with the goal to generate a substantial income needs to put a lot of time and effort into planning and implementing the proper business decisions to succeed.
More and more companies are offering attractive affiliate programs as a way of attracting more sales through the efforts of affiliates, giving an affiliate the opportunity to become a money maker with his or her own home based business. These programs can be very successful for both the company and the affiliate. However, there are good programs and bad programs. Knowing what to look for in an affiliate program can save you a lot of time and money. As there are thousands of affiliate programs offering wide range of benefits to their affiliates. However, many of these programs and the claims they make are not to be trusted.
Affiliate marketing has its ups and downs. It could be draining if you are not armed with updated information and the technical aspects. Good affiliate programs need to be evaluated to distinguish them from doubtful ones. There are several factors to consider before someone decides to join any affiliate program.
- Product- should be of high quality. You must be able to create a need for the product, if you yourself don’t feel like purchasing the product, how can you compel others?
- Company - You should have a positive feeling about the company. If something bothers you then rather walk away!
- Price – Price plays rather a more crucial role, the more affordable the price the more products will be sold through your referrals / promotions.
- Commission- One thing that I believe most of the people would look for is the percentage of commission. After all who would like to work for peanuts?
- Payment- Another factor to consider is the mode and frequency of payment.
- Support available to the affiliates- What the affiliates look for in an affiliate program? The answer is guidance and support. Many organizations have excellent support system by way of trainings, tutorials, articles, and much more to provide!
- Track record of the organization- The organization should have proven track record of operating their programs for several years successfully. After all, money is not everything!
To conclude, affiliate marketing is a revenue sharing partnership between a web merchant and one or more affiliates. The affiliate is paid a commission for referring clicks, leads or most often sales to the merchant. An affiliate’s advantage is that he can make money in a business where he doesn’t have the upfront costs of creating his own product, and he doesn’t have to worry about e-commerce, bookkeeping, or even customer support for it is the merchant’s responsibility.
