Nokia Developing Semantic Visual Search Engine for Mobile Devices

By: Loren Baker | Source: webpronews.com

According to a patent filing, Nokia is working to develop a Semantic Visual Search Engine to organize the multimedia content on mobile phones. The technology will enable “a system to learn, categorize and search items such as images and video clips according to their semantic meanings.”

Once complete, the cell phone will contain software capable of learning about the photos and video clips stored on the mobile phone, then categorize them according to recognizable visual metric elements.

Reddit Adding Interactive Advertising & Ad Voting

By: Loren Baker | Source: webpronews.com

Steve from Reddit announced Wednesday on the Reddit Blog that Wired & Reddit will be adding advertising to the Reddit interface.

Part of the reason reddit was acquired was so that eventually it could be used to sell advertising….We’ve always held that content is our #1 priority, and that isn’t changing. Towards that end, we’ve specifically asked for ads with no moving parts, and we’re not rearranging any content to make room for them.

Plus, I think we found a way to track the ads so we can let you vote/comment on them.

The ability to vote on ads will be a breath of fresh air, if it does not backfire, for Reddit - say the users vote negatively for all of the ads.

Reddit’s largest competitor and Google AdSense partner, Digg.com, has not integrated advertising into their “Digg” and “Bury” model, probably for the same reasons. Instead, Digg blasts banners and box ads above and to the right of their content.

Other social sites have experimented with alternative forms of advertising which add to their community appeal.

RSS Buttons for Your Blog

By: Lee Odden | Source: toprankblog.com

According to Lee Odden, one of the problems with the search marketing blogs is that either there is no icon for the RSS feed or it’s hidden way below the fold, blog owners don’t make it easy to subscribe.

Something as easy as adding a prominient RSS button near the top of the blog template with the word “Subscribe” near it can increase the number of return visitors substantially.

A study by Yahoo and Ipsos Insight supports the need to display RSS subscription options as blog readers were found to be far more likely to subscribe to a blog if they say a familiar graphic for their favorite RSS reader, whether it was Bloglines, MyYahoo or Google Reader. One solution is to this free RSS button tool.

if your blog does not place a RSS graphic high on the page, then you’re missing out on a substantial amount of return traffic and visibility. Use the free RSS button tool and make it easy for your readers to subscribe to your content. You can output a list of RSS reader graphic buttons or just display one large RSS button as we do at the top right of this page.
