Google Blog Search Adds Ping Service

Source: searchenginejournal.com

Google has added a pinging service to its Blog Search offering. Dubbed Google Blog Search Pinging Service, now bloggers and blog providers (such as blogger, wordpress.com or blogs.com) can now instantly inform Google Blog Search of new posts and content changes.

Besides its own new Pinging Service, Google Blog Search uses other ping services to update its index as to when blogs are updated.

Sure, manual pinging is very 2003/2004 as most blog software pings automatically, but by using the Google Blog Search Pinging Service, bloggers will no longer have to wait for Google to crawl their blogs in order for new posts to show up in the Google Blog Search index.

By doing so, blogs get updated faster in Google Blog Search and Google can consolidate its blog crawling more efficiently.

Blogs can be manually submitted to the Google Pinging Service and most blog providers should soon start pinging Google automatically

PureVideo.com : Meta Video Search Engine

By: Loren Baker | Source: searchenginejournal.com

New meta search engine for online video content, PureVideo.com (Pure Video Search) has launched in beta as a one stop location for the searching of online video across the major Internet video providers. PureVideo.com aggregates crawled data from YouTube, MySpace Video, Comedy Central, Fox Sports, ESPN, CNN, DailyMotion.com and GoFish among others.

PureVideo.com is the search engine which is also connecting the online video sites of the PureVideo Networks’ other sites, StupidVideos.com and GrindTV.com (sports). Upon searching for queries in PureVideo.com multiple results are served with the tite of each video, its description, a thumbnail image of the video and the site which is hosting the video. Google AdSense ads are also served to the right side of the video search results.

simple search on PureVideo.com, however, some features are lacking in this meta search engine:

1. It would be useful to have the length of the video posted in the results. I believe that users prefer quasi-full length videos, lonfer that one minute.

2. The ability to sort results by source, video length, or date uploaded.

3. Less than 100 video results per page. A search for Ray Lewis results in some relevant videos, but 100 of them to scroll and sort through is a bit overwhelming.

4. PureVideo should work with Google AdSense to showcase a Google Video AdSense ad as either the top sponsored result, or the 3rd or 4th video. Doing so may prove to be more effective in terms of revenue generation than the old run of the mill right side AdSense skyscraper.

5. When I tried searching for terms within quotation marks, I was served an error message: No Results Available for “\\”. This needs to be fixed before Monday as many searchers naturally use quotes when searching for multi-keyword terms.

Google May Be In Talks To Buy YouTube

Source: webpronews.com

The search engine Google Inc. (Google.com) is reportedly in talks to purchase YouTube Inc. (YouTube.com) for about $1.6 Billion.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the two companies are holding discussions, but are at a sensitive stage in talks right now.

"We do not comment on rumors and speculation," said Google spokesman Jon Murchinson.

YouTube allows visitors to upload video files and share them with viewers from all around the world. It’s estimated that over 100 million people view these videos every day.

Several online marketers have adopted YouTube as a medium for advertising their products and services through promotion oriented video clips. Some videos are blatant advertising while others are more subtle. A search on YouTube for videos uploaded by Chris Pirillo, formerly of TechTV, yields several examples of a company capitalizing on the social media phenomena by providing short blooper out-takes from the TechTV show and other more personal and less commercial adventures.

In the past YouTube has been criticized for allowing users to post copyrighted material on it’s website but that hasn’t stopped YouTube from signing a deal with Warner Music Group to distribute and host music videos and artist interviews.

When Google has bought a company in the past it’s usually been with the intent to some how fold the new company into Google’s current product and service offering. How Google intends to do that with YouTube remains to be seen. However it is likely to make YouTube even more attractive as a online marketing medium if the proposed purchase is finalized.
