stop words & filter words

Stop Words

When searching for keyword phrases, search engines ignore stop words. This is done in order to speed up the search process and save space on the server.

Saving Space

Search engines exclude the search words in a search query by replacing stop words with a marker. Example: “outsourcing in

USA

” is a search query. The stop word “in” is marked with “*” and the search will be conducted for “outsourcing *

USA

”.

Speeding the search process

Search engines exclude stop words from the search query. Stop words can be adverbs, conjunctions etc.

Some major search engines such as Google along with other search engines automatically searches for stop words in the search phrases.

Filter Words

The words that are removed by search engines from web pages before being added to the database are called as filter words. Some common filter words are: a, the, is, an, of, it. While indexing the page content search engines filter these words. When indexing huge amount of web pages it becomes necessary for search engines to filter these words.
